"What a pleasure it was to work with these girls... they were enthusiastic and interested.", BOURNEMOUTH & POOLE COLLEGE OF FURTHER EDUCATION
At Avonbourne we view education as a life long process that continues beyond the classroom. Outside of lessons we provide a wide range of extra curricular activities which all students can enjoy. If your daughter has a particular talent or interest they will be able to pursue it to the highest standards possible.
Our reputation for excellence in the Arts is well established, with hundreds of students taking part in a range of activities including drama and art clubs, dance performances, choir, orchestra and bands, music and vocal tuition and whole school productions such as Fame, Bugsy Malone, Oliver and Grease. Avonbourne students participate in the community and have the opportunity to work with professional artists and performers.
Our extensive playing fields and sports facilities provide an ideal environment for a huge range of sporting activities to take place. A great many Avonbourne students have gained representative honours at County, National and International level. Among the many clubs we offer are gymnastics, trampolining, badminton, football, netball, self-defence, hockey, athletics and tennis. In addition we offer the Junior Sports Leader and Junior Dance Leader awards and some students have the opportunity to gain coaching certificates in a sport of their choice. We have been delighted to be granted the Sportsmark Award in recognition of provision across the school.
The outdoor education provision at Avonbourne is also first class. The Duke of Edinburgh scheme is firmly embedded in our extra curricular programme with more and more students participating every year. Over 400 bronze and 200 silver awards have been achieved with many going on to gain Gold awards. We are very proud of our contribution to the Changemakers project where students work closely with the local youth service to support the disadvantaged in the community. Avonbourne also sends teams to compete in the Kielder Challenge an event that pairs able bodied and disabled students in a series of outdoor problem solving activities.
Away from the playing fields we offer a host of opportunities to suit all interests inclding clubs for aspiring chefs, writers, ICT professionals plus public speaking and magistrates competitions for those interested in legal professions. Students run our in house radio station and organise a termly lunchtime concert.
We organise many educational visits and exchanges, which are carefully planned to support and enhance the curriculum as well as motivate and enthuse our students. These include a French Exchange, Paris study tour, a variety of field trips, participation in Bournemouth University's Aim Higher programme, visits to Art galleries and museums, a number of regional Enterprise events and competitions plus an annual Ski trip during February half term.
These opportunities give a flavour of the multitude of events and activities available to your daughter. In addition we provide subject specific support for revision, coursework and general academic work to maximise your daughter's chances of success.
