Learning communities

Avonbourne School is a learning community

There are more than 1069 students at Avonbourne between the ages of 11 and 16. However there is another group of learners who the general public do not know about. In fact there are roughly another 70 learners between the ages of 22 to retirement; the staff. At Avonbourne we view our whole community as learners. We do not believe that one person is the fountain of all knowledge and we accept that self development offers everyone an all round better educational experience.All members of the teaching staff belong to a chosen Learning Community. Each Community offers its members the chance to study and practice in areas of specific interest which will improve the teaching and learning experience in the classroom. There are five Communities;

  • Assessment for Learning
  • Learning Styles
  • Philosophy for Children
  • Enterprise Learning
  • Thinking Skills.

Each Community has its own Facilitator and Leading Practitioners who support and coach staff in their own practice and research. These Communities offer the staff the opportunity to share good practice and to learn from the experiences of each other. We believe that if we are going to provide our pupils with the necessary tools to thrive the 21st century then our staff need to be one step ahead of the game in knowing what these tools are, or likely to be.

More information to follow on these five communities.
