Our aim within Design and Technology is to enable students to think creatively, to develop their problem solving skills and to make quality products; both individually and as part of a team.

Think...Design...Create!

Design and Technology encourages students to identify needs and opportunities and enables them to respond by developing ideas, leading to the development of a solution and the making quality products. Throughout all areas of Design and Technology students combine the development of practical skills with developing an understanding of aesthetic, social and environmental issues and investigating the use and impact of present and past design and technology.

Through studying Design and Technology students should be able to:

Identify problems, which can be solved with a practical outcome;

Analyse problems and produce a specification to help develop a solution;

Highlight any restrictions which will affect the proposed solution;

Identify the materials and equipment that are required to develop the solution;

Collate any relevant information needed to develop a solution to the problem;

Produce and interpret any research and information needed to lead to a solution;

Generate a range of possible ideas that could be potential solutions;

Assess the solutions and relate each back to the initial specification;

Select and develop a solution after considering any possible constraints;

Plan the development of the chosen solution;

Demonstrate the necessary skills needed to make the product;

Make any modifications during the manufacture of the product;

Test and evaluate the product against the original specification;

Suggest any changes that could be made to improve the product;

Ensure that health and safety practices are stringently followed;

Make appropriate use of ICT throughout all stages of the project work.
