In year 10 and 11, students study the AQA Core Science A course assessed through six modular tests (see links for examples) and a centre assessed investigative component. Additional Science is also offered which is assessed by three examinations at the end of the course. The Additional Science course also includes a centre-assessed investigative component.
Students are taught in classes that best suit their ability. Apart from the lowest set, each group is taught by a pair of teachers. From September 2008, virtually all KS4 pupils will be entered for the Core Science A and Additional Science resulting in two GCSEs.
The department also offers the OCR double award GCSE in Health and Social Care. There are currently two groups in year 11 and one group in year 10. The students are assessed through two pieces of coursework and one external exam; all of equal weighting.
